For Consultants

A number of educational and intervention tools have been developed based on the material in Leading Teams. These tools are intended for use by consultants, trainers, and change agents who work with organizational teams and leaders.

Team Diagnostic Survey (TDS). The TDS is an instrument taken by team members to assess the quality of a team's design, leadership, and internal dynamics. We are now developing a version of the instrument that can be administered on the internet and that will automatically generate a feedback report, complete with visual profiles of a team's standing on key dimensions, for use in action-planning by teams and their leaders. For information on the TDS, click here.

Teaching Cases. Three cases have been developed to help team members and leaders explore the factors that shape team performance and practice team leadership skills. These are:

The London Symphony Orchestra (available from Case Services, Harvard Business School). This case examines leadership in a large self-governing orchestra, with special attention to the role and behavior of a chief executive in a self-governing context. The case may be especially useful for teams in nonprofit organizations.

Nobody on the Podium: Lessons for Leaders from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (available from Case Services, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University). This video case about the conductor-less Orpheus Orchestra encourages participants to explore the risks and opportunities of shared leadership in task-performing teams.

The Overhead Reduction Task Force (available from Case Services, Harvard Business School). This video enactment shows the entire life history of a team that has troubles. The case and video provide an opportunity to integrate and apply the lessons from Leading Teams about both team design and leader coaching.

Intervention Tools. We have developed a number of tools for use by interventionists in working with task-performing teams, and these are available for use by others. Included are tools for assessing assessing the fit between how a team actually operates and how members think it should operate, for forming and launching teams, for conducting a mid-point review of a team's progress, and so on.
